Keynsham 55 Cleve 27

Nick FALCONER21 Mar 2022 - 10:44

No hangover from last week's cup heroics

Keynsham welcomed Cleve to Crown Fields for the third time this season. After a team photo to celebrate last week, Chris warned the team this would be one of the hardest games to play, after winning a cup, playing a dangerous opponent a week later the team would need to would really need to work hard to maintain focus, and will to win.

Things did not start well, as Cleve's large forwards were making easy yards and after a few minute with several missed tackles they scored the first try and also converted. This woke Keynsham up and from the first piece of real possession, Jake made a break and made it to the try line.
Cleve were looking to take any points available and after an infringement, they duly kicked the penalty (which for many was quite a rare sight this season a team kicking for points).

Keynsham didn't take long to reply, and from set piece, the backs spread the ball wide, John drew the last man and passed to Dan who sprinted down the wing and got under the posts to make the conversion easier for John who duly kicked. A few minutes later another sweeping move lead to our hybrid prop/winger (playing prop yesterday) Fin gassing his opponent out wide and scored from 20-30m out. Fin is one of a few players this season who has effectively played in more than one position (Hayden being another), but you couldn't be more different than wing and prop, but Fin has done well in both!
This was a purple patch for the boys and John scored a try which he also converted and Keynsham's scoring in the half concluded with another try by Jake. Cleve pulled one back.

HALF TIME 29-15

Cleve started the 2nd half strongly and scored again. Although they didn't convert 29-20 felt like there could be a momentum change. Chris talked about the team needing resilience and the boys showed this. Another strong run by Jake led to him scoring his hattrick. Then from a Cleve lineout, George ripped the ball from the ensuing maul, and charged down the field. He was eventually pulled down and after quick recycling and Dan getting close, George was again there to support to crash over the line. Cleve kicked short from the restart, and from the scrum Thomas broke away, dummied and went all the way.

After a burst of three tries by Keynsham, Cleve did score one of their own, again a case of missed tackles, which they also converted. With 1 minute left Keynsham were determined to have the final say. A concerted attack led to the ball going out wide to Dan. He duly scored one of his trademark weaving tries which John then converted to conclude the scoring.

FULL TIME 55-27
